Assures the East African nation on strengthening ties
New Delhi: In a significant move to strengthen bilateral relations, Dammu Ravi, Secretary (Economic Relations) in the Ministry of External Affairs, represented Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the Investiture Ceremony of Madagascar’s President, Andry Rajoelina. During his courtesy call to President Rajoelina after the inauguration, Secretary Ravi extended Prime Minister Modi’s best wishes for the President’s second tenure and expressed India’s desire to enhance the India-Madagascar partnership, in line with Vision SAGAR.
MEA Secretary Damu was on a three days visit to Antananarivo, Madagascar, from December 15 to 17, 2023. Many world leaders were invited for the Investiture ceremony of the President Rajoelina. Secretary Damu utilised this opportunity to meet with the Chairperson of the African Union, Azali Assoumani on the side-lines of the ceremony. He conveyed Prime Minister Modi’s greetings and emphasized India’s commitment to a robust India-Africa Partnership. African Union was recently included as a permanent member of the G20 under India’s presidency due to efforts by Prime Minister Modi’s himself.
He also talked to leading Malagasy business figures, exploring avenues to bolster trade and economic ties between India and Madagascar.
The evening of December 16, Secretary Ravi participated in a reception hosted by the Indian Embassy in Antananarivo for the Indian community. He spoke about India’s ongoing economic transformation and encouraged the Indian Diaspora in Madagascar to foster stronger trade, economic cooperation, and people-to-people connections between the two nations.
Secretary Ravi’s visit to Antananarivo underscores India’s dedication to reinforcing its longstanding friendship with Madagascar. As a neighboring developing country in the Indian Ocean Region, India reaffirms its role as a reliable and committed partner in Madagascar’s development journey.
Madagascar’s strategic importance for India stems from its geographical location in the Indian Ocean, crucial for maritime security under India’s “SAGAR” initiative. The country’s rich natural resources, including minerals and unique biodiversity, offer substantial economic opportunities for India in mining, agriculture, and eco-tourism. Additionally, historical connections through the Indian diaspora and shared colonial past have fostered cultural ties, enhancing bilateral relations. Collaborating with Madagascar aids India in maritime security, particularly against piracy, ensuring safer sea lanes vital for India’s trade. Moreover, India’s engagement with Madagascar aligns with its broader strategy to expand its influence in Africa, countering the presence of other global powers. India has also played a significant role in providing humanitarian assistance to Madagascar, especially during natural disasters, demonstrating its commitment as a regional leader in humanitarian efforts.
